A smart home should make daily life easier, not add another set of unreliable gadgets to troubleshoot. The difference between automation that quietly works and automation that constantly frustrates almost always comes down to the foundations beneath it. That’s why Birch Tech takes an infrastructure-first approach across Sydney and NSW: we get the network, cabling, cameras and AV right, then layer app and voice control on top.

Foundations first, control on top

Most smart-home problems aren’t really about the smart devices; they’re about a weak network, dead WiFi spots or cabling that was never planned for. We start by assessing your home’s infrastructure and shoring it up where needed, so that when the lights, cameras, audio and climate controls go in, they stay connected and responsive. A reliable backbone is the single biggest factor in whether your automation feels effortless or flaky.

Ecosystem-neutral, built around your home

We don’t push a single brand. Whether Apple Home, Google Home or a Matter-based setup suits you best depends on the devices you already own, the phones in your household and how you like to control things. We give you honest, ecosystem-neutral advice and recommend the path that fits your home, then supply and program it so everything works together. Where it makes sense, we integrate your existing CCTV, televisions, speakers and AV gear rather than asking you to replace what already works.

Retrofit-friendly for existing homes

You generally don’t need to rewire to enjoy a genuinely smart home. Our retrofit-friendly approach combines your existing structure with a sensible mix of wired and wireless devices, so we can automate an established home with minimal disruption. You can start with a single room or feature and expand over time, knowing the foundation is ready for more.

Licensed, insured and clear about scope

Birch Tech is a registered ACMA cabler, not an electrician. The low-voltage, data and networking side is our core competency. Any hardwired mains lighting, switch or switchboard work is carried out by our partnered licensed NSW electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000 — we never do DIY mains work. All work is fully insured and performed by licensed, police-checked technicians under NSW Master Licence #000106391.

FAQs

Smart Home Automation Sydney — FAQs

What is home automation, exactly?

Home automation lets you control and coordinate things like lighting, climate, cameras, audio, blinds and entertainment from a single app or by voice. Instead of operating each device separately, you can set scenes and schedules so your home responds automatically. Birch Tech focuses on getting the underlying infrastructure right first, because reliable automation depends on a solid network and cabling foundation.

Do I need to rewire my house for smart home automation?

In most cases, no. Our approach is retrofit-friendly, so we work with your home's existing structure and use a sensible mix of wired and wireless devices to achieve what you want. Some additions, such as extra hardwired points or cabling, can improve reliability, and we'll explain where that's worthwhile. We'll always tell you honestly what can be done without rewiring and what genuinely benefits from it.

Which smart home ecosystem is best — Apple Home, Google Home or Matter?

There's no single best ecosystem; the right one depends on the devices you already use, the phones in your household and how you like to control things. We're ecosystem-neutral, so we recommend whatever fits your home rather than pushing one brand. Matter is increasingly useful because it helps devices from different makers work together, and we factor that into our advice during your consultation.

Can you integrate my existing CCTV, TV and AV equipment?

Often, yes. Where your current cameras, televisions, speakers and AV gear are compatible, we can bring them into a coordinated system so you control them alongside everything else. Compatibility varies between brands and ages of equipment, so we assess what you have during the design stage and tell you what will integrate cleanly and what may not. The goal is to make the most of your existing investment.

Is the system controlled by app, voice, or both?

Both. You can control your home from a single app on your phone or tablet, whether you're at home or away, and you can use voice control through your chosen ecosystem for hands-free operation. We also set up scenes and automations so common routines happen with one tap or automatically, without you needing to touch anything at all.

Does smart home automation still work without internet or with Starlink?

Many core functions, such as local lighting scenes and certain device controls, can keep working on your home network even if the internet drops, depending on the ecosystem and devices chosen. Remote access and voice assistants generally need an internet connection. The system works well over Starlink or NBN, and where reliable connectivity matters we can discuss failover options as part of the network design.

Do you do whole-home automation or single rooms?

Both. Some clients start with a single room or one feature, such as lighting or audio in a living area, while others automate the whole home in one project. A common, sensible path is to get the network and cabling foundation right first, then expand room by room over time. We'll design a plan that suits your budget and lets you add to it later.

Who does the electrical work — are you electricians?

Birch Tech is a registered ACMA cabler, not an electrician, and we never do DIY mains work. Any hardwired mains lighting, switch or switchboard work is carried out by our partnered licensed NSW electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000. The low-voltage and data side, such as networking, device installation and cabling, is our core competency and is covered by our cabling licence.

What does smart home automation cost?

There's no fixed price because every home and brief is different. The main factors are the size of your home, how many rooms and devices are involved, the ecosystem and hardware chosen, whether we're integrating existing gear, and how much programming and infrastructure work is required. We provide a free no-obligation quote after the consultation so you know the cost up front, and you can start small and expand later.

Are you licensed and insured for this work?

Yes. Birch Tech is an ACMA-registered cabler operating under NSW Master Licence #000106391, fully insured, with licensed and police-checked technicians. Any mains electrical work is performed by our partnered licensed NSW electrician under AS/NZS 3000. We serve Sydney and across NSW with 24/7 availability and free no-obligation quotes — call 1300 287 256 or 0468 872 562.
