Pre-wiring a new build or renovation: what to run

There is a short window during any new build or renovation when getting the cabling right is easy: while the walls are open. Once the plasterboard goes up, every cable you wish you had run becomes a messy, expensive retrofit. A bit of planning at frame stage saves a lot of pain and money later, and it makes the smart-home features you add down the track simply drop into place.

Why pre-wiring beats Wi-Fi for everything

Wi-Fi is convenient, but it is not the right tool for every job. A wired connection is faster, more stable and immune to the interference and dead spots that plague wireless. For anything that matters, a cable in the wall is the connection you will never have to think about again.

Pre-wiring during construction means:

  • No drilling, chasing or patching later, which is where retrofit cost and mess come from.
  • Clean cable runs hidden in the walls instead of trailing across rooms.
  • A home that is ready for technology you have not even bought yet.

This work falls under extra-low voltage (ELV) cabling, which covers data, AV, security and automation wiring as distinct from mains power. It is the quiet backbone that makes a modern home work.

What to run, and where

You do not need to wire every wall, but a few key runs cover almost everything most homes will ever want.

Data points (Ethernet). Run at least one or two data points to every key room: living areas, bedrooms, the study and the kitchen. Use good-quality cable so the runs are future-friendly. These feed smart TVs, desktops, gaming, work-from-home setups and Wi-Fi access points.

A central communications hub. Pick a spot, often a cupboard or the garage, where every cable terminates. This becomes the heart of the home network, where the NBN connection, router, switch and any AV gear live. Getting this location right is one of the most important decisions in the whole plan.

Wi-Fi access point cabling. Even in a wired home, you still want strong Wi-Fi everywhere. Running data cable to ceiling points lets you mount tidy access points later for full coverage, rather than relying on a single router fighting through brick walls.

AV and entertainment. Wire behind TV locations and to any planned media room or outdoor entertaining area so screens, speakers and projectors connect cleanly without visible cables.

Security and cameras. Run cabling to door, gate and corner positions for cameras, plus the front door for a video intercom. Wired cameras are more reliable than battery models and do not need charging.

Automation. If you are even considering smart blinds, lighting control, sensors or zoned audio later, running a little extra ELV cable now is cheap insurance. A proper smart home pre-wire plan maps these runs so the features drop in without re-opening walls.

Plan around your NBN and entry point

Think early about where the NBN service will enter the property and how it will reach your communications hub. The lead-in location is not always obvious, and getting a cable from the street to the right cupboard is far easier before the walls and landscaping are finished. We can advise on the entry point and lead-in so the connection lands neatly. If you want to confirm what NBN technology your address will get, an NBN technician can check it for you.

A simple pre-wire checklist

When you sit down with your builder or electrician, make sure the plan covers:

  • One or two data points in every main room.
  • A central hub location with power nearby.
  • Ceiling cabling for Wi-Fi access points.
  • Cabling behind TV and media positions.
  • Camera and intercom runs at entries and corners.
  • Spare conduit or a draw-wire to key spots for future use.
  • A clearly agreed NBN entry point and lead-in path.

That last point, leaving a draw-wire or empty conduit, is the cheapest bit of future-proofing there is. It lets you pull new cable through later without opening a single wall.

Get the cabling right while you can

The cost of running cable during construction is small. The cost of retrofitting it afterwards is not. A well-planned ELV and data layout means your NBN, AV, cameras and automation all drop in cleanly when you are ready, with no mess and no compromise.
